Life can be stressful, but for someone who has sustained a traumatic brain injury, it is extremely stressful because most of the tasks that we take for granted suddenly become more difficult and sometimes seem impossible. My focus is helping people get their lives back on track through learning how to use strategies to improve cognitive skills, such as, memory, planning and organizing, and problem-solving and decision-making, to gain more independence.
My undergraduate degree is in Psychology with an emphasis in Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy and my masters is in Clinical Counseling Psychology. I have been providing Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy to people diagnosed with traumatic brain injury since 1993, which is when I began working at the MossRehab Clubhouse. Here the staff and Clubhouse members were equal and worked side-by-side to run the Clubhouse. This is where I adopted my therapeutic style of putting myself in my clients’ position and trying to provide the type of services I would need and expect. In 1997 I began providing in-home Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy to clients using their everyday tasks and activities to adapt the cognitive strategies for practical purposes. I have had many different experiences and interactions over the years in these settings with both the clients and their families alike and feel that as a result I have gained a lot of expertise in the field of traumatic brain injury.
In addition to my degrees, I have been certified in the practice of Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy since 1998 and I have been a certified Brain Injury Specialist since 2006. I am also a member of the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania and The Society for Cognitive Rehabilitation. In 2018 I was approved through the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists to be a Brian Injury Fundamentals trainer, which is a training and certificate program for non-licensed direct care staff and individual caregivers.
At The Center I provide one-on-one Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy to clients either in their homes or in our office. In addition, I assist the neuropsychologists with the neuropsychological evaluations. I really enjoy working with my clients, assisting them to make progress toward their goals and to improve their lives.
